Now available in the RDA Toolkit
Now available in the RDA Toolkit!
* ALA Digital Reference Publisher Troy Linker joined Amigos Library Services at "RDA @ Your Library: An Online Conference about Resource Description and Access" in early February to present "AACR2 to RDA: Using the RDA Toolkit." He offered background and tips for making a successful transition from AACR2 to RDA and how the RDA Toolkit can help. The presentation is now archived and free on the RDA Toolkit website. Watch the presentation now !
Summary of the presentation:
* An overview of the new vocabulary, organization, functions, and resources in the RDA Toolkit that can help AACR2 users quickly interact with RDA.
* Support built into the RDA Toolkit that helps in migrating from AACR2 to the RDA Toolkit.
* How AACR2 is integrated into the RDA Toolkit.
* RDA Mappings and Workflows, Element Set, and the "three-tab" concept.
* Enhancements including improved searching of RDA by AACR2 rule number.
* Links to more in-depth resources on the FRBR and FRAD conceptual models.
* Also available on the RDA Toolkit website are free archives of all previous RDA Toolkit webinars.
* And did you know that the Library of Congress Policy Statements (LCPS) are now freely available in the RDA Toolkit? You don't need an RDA Toolkit subscription to access the LCPS.
* Purchase your RDA Toolkit subscriptions online from anywhere in the world! Note that the online store calculates for you the double-user offer* through August 31, 2011. Check out how easy it is to subscribe online.
*What's the double-user offer? During the evaluation and initial implementation of RDA when you are likely to need more frequent concurrent access, you receive double the purchased number of concurrent users of the RDA Toolkit at no additional charge for your first subscription period. (For example, buy a 2-user site license and get a 4-user license for no additional cost.)

RDA Toolkit demonstration available on the ACOC website
A demonstration of the RDA Toolkit has been made available on the ACOC website to help libraries get the most out of the open-access period.
Background:
RDA is the new standard that will replace AACR2 (implementation expected in mid 2011). The RDA instructions are part of an integrated web-based online package called the RDA Toolkit. As well as instructions, the RDA Toolkit also includes a variety of tools and links that help you use and interpret the RDA instructions.
Access to the Toolkit:
The contents of the RDA Toolkit are open at no charge for everyone to try in a free trial period from the RDA launch on June 23, 2010 through to August 31, 2010. If you have not already signed up then you can sign up now at http://www.rdatoolkit.org/openaccess. The open-access period is also an important opportunity to provide comments and feedback to the publishers before implementation. Report issues with the RDA Toolkit to the RDA Toolkit Support Center http://www.rdatoolkit.org/support/.
For other information about the RDA Toolkit including pricing, an updated FAQ, and web videos of the RDA Toolkit see the Co-Publishers website at http://www.rdatoolkit.org
Demonstration of the Toolkit:
The ACOC website has information and resources relating to the implementation of RDA in Australia. Just added is a National Library presentation using the RDA Toolkit This demonstration of the Toolkit includes an introduction to its basic features and some tips on how to make the best of the trial period to become familiar with the Toolkit.
More information relating to the Australian implementation of RD, including training on cataloguing with RDA, will progressively be made available on the ACOC website

Survey on RDA requirements
This survey will provide important information to assist us in facilitating the provision of training in RDA for Australian and New Zealand libraries.
The survey is available at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/6HNDQ3J. It should only take 5-10 minutes to complete. We would appreciate it if you could reply by 31 March 2010.
***We request that you consult with your colleagues and submit only one reply for each library or organisation.***
If you have any questions about the survey, please contact ACOC at dkiorgaa@nla.gov.au.

Resource Description and Access (RDA) - update
This is an update from Sandy based on her notes from the presentation she attended at the Information Online Conference in January 2009. The presentation was by Deidre Kiorgaard from NLA.
Resource Description and Access (RDA) is a new standard to be adopted in the U.S.A., Australia, etc. that is a new generational cataloguing code for the digital world. It is to be used in web based and other web based discovery services. Even though AACR is a robust system – it has reached the end of its life and was created in the era of the card entry – RDA will replace it.
RDA in the web environment
- clearly defined element set for better granularity
- greater emphasis on relationships
- better interoperability
- common vocabulary
- better coverage
Purchasing RDA
- various subscription models
- cataloguer’s desktop software to be available
MARC and system changes
- there will be MARC changes
- changes to record creation and import/export
- training/aids
The National Library of Australia (NLA)is involved in the interim implementation strategy. NLA will work with training providers and at this stage is it expected that only cataloguers will require training.
RDA should be fully online as a cataloguing tool in late 2009, and cataloguers and database managers should familiarise themselves with FRBR to gain from understanding RDA.
Functional Requirement for Bibliographic Records (FRBR)
What is FRBR? Click here for more information. There is also the FRBRBlog
Benefits of FRBR
- Improved efficiency of data
- Improved navigation at the catalogue for the user
- Improved catalogue displays
Functional Requirements for Subject Authority Records (FRSAR)

FRSAR can…
- Identify and define things – entities
- Identify and define attributes
- Identify and define relationship

Australian Committee on Cataloguing

Ex Libris position on RDA
Below is an email received from Ex Libris explaining their position on RDA (Resource, Description and Access), the eagerly awaited replacement for AACR2.........
Dear Voyager and Aleph Customers,
Please find attached the Ex Libris position on RDA. In addition, Ex Libris are attending a forum about RDA at ALA this week, which is being sponsored by the national libraries in the U.S. The forum is a prelude to a pilot testing program that will occur in the second half of 2009. We expect to know more about the implementation of RDA following the testing.
